Department of Azerbaijani language and literature

The Department of Azerbaijani Language and Literature is part of the Faculty of Philology and Translation. It consists of two chairs: The Chair of Literature and the Chair of Language. The department’s academic staff includes 1 assistant professor, 3 PhD teachers, 2 teachers and 1 professional writer.

At the Chair of Language, students are thoroughly trained in the various fields of Azerbaijani language, ranging from its historical development to the phonetic, lexical and grammatical structures of the language. In our teaching, we focus both on the theoretical and the practical dimensions of modern language studies. In the course of their studies, students focus on general issues of linguistics, on fundamental structures and processes of the language and also on modern methods of linguistic research. Furthermore, they study Azerbaijani dialectology which allows for a profound analysis of the different stages of our rich and varied language history. The chair offers seminars in Turkology in which students get acquainted with the wide variety of Turkic languages and with their place within the context of world languages. We also consider it as our mission to preserve the rich tradition of our Azerbaijani language and oral culture by providing courses to all the faculties of Western Caspian University.

Teaching at the Chair of Literature covers all the stages of Azerbaijani literature from its beginnings up to the present day. Students are moreover made familiar with canonical literary works of the European, American and Russian tradition. Our chair pays particular attention both to the theoretical analysis of literary fictions and to their position and significance in culture and public life.
